Our Family Musical

Mia writes a musical about what it's like to have a family with two different cultures for a school project and performs it for Elmo. The first song is about how her dad's family is Jewish and her Papi's family is Cuban. Mia celebrates holidays like Rosh Hashanah and New Year's Eve and has lullabies sung to her in two different languages. For the finale, she shares how her two cultures come together, like having Shabbat dinners with Cuban food and eating twelve grapes on New Year's Eve. Families can be made of different cultures and there's so much to share!

Shabbat Shalom!

It's Friday evening and Charlie's family is preparing for a Shabbat dinner. When they find out there's a water leak in the apartment, they decide to have their dinner in the arbor and share their special meal with their friends. Meredith and Big Bird help set up the table while Charlie and Victor show Alan, Elmo, and Tamir how to make challah bread, a traditional Jewish bread they eat as part of their Shabbat dinner. It's now sundown and the table is set with beef and potato stew, green beans, candles, a kiddish cup, and challah bread. Once everyone gathers at the table, Meredith lights the candles and says a blessing in Hebrew to welcome Shabbat. Victor then says a blessing to the children and together they say a blessing over the grape juice and challah bread. After everyone enjoys the meal, Charlie's friends thank her for including them. Charlie is happy to share her family's special meal with her friends.

Proud of My Name

Elmo, Gabrielle, and Rosita join a basketball team! They meet Coach Jones and their new teammates and begin to practice. Coach Jones calls out each member of the team, but Rosita realizes she didn't get a turn because the coach said "Rosie" instead of "Rosita." As practice continues, the other teammates also start calling Rosita, "Rosie," making Rosita feel frustrated. Her name is "Rosita," not "Rosie" and she's proud of her name. Rosita is hesitant to correct the coach. Elmo and Gabrielle understand that it's hard to tell grown-ups when they've got something wrong. They help Rosita gain courage to tell Coach Jones that she likes to be called "Rosita." Coach Jones apologizes and is happy she told her. Coach Jones tells the rest of the team to call Rosita by the correct name. Names are a big part of who we are and it's important to get them right.

Just then, Ji-Young gets an idea to celebrate on Sesame Street. Alan, Elmo, and Charlie offer to help and ask what their families do to celebrate Lunar New Year. After Ji-Young, Qui, and Lily share how their families decorate, receive envelopes as gifts, and special foods they eat, they all get ready for a celebration. Alan and Ji-Young cook tteokguk, a soup with rice cakes, Charlie and Lily make red envelopes, and Qui and Elmo decorate the table with peach blossoms branches. Their families celebrate Lunar New Year by doing some things the same, and different in a lot of ways too, but they all celebrate with family and friends.

Elmo and Gabrielle share about what they want to be when they grow up. Gabrielle wants to be the first African American woman formula one race car driver. But Elmo isn't sure if he can be the first monster-cook-teacher-cooking teacher. Gabrielle performs a show and tells Elmo and Grover about Bessie Coleman. She shares that Bessie Coleman wanted to learn how to fly an airplane but wasn't allowed to because of the way she looked. However, Bessie Coleman didn't give up and went far away to a school that taught her how to fly an airplane no matter what she looked like. With Bessie's courage, she became the very first African American and Native American woman to fly an airplane! Thanks to Gabrielle's show, Elmo and Grover learn that just because they may be the first person to do something doesn't mean that can't do it. Elmo doesn't give up and decides to become the first monster-cook-teacher-cooking teacher.

Brave Bessie, By Brave Gabrielle

Sesame Street's Lunar New Year Celebration

There's been a snowstorm on Sesame Street and Lily and Qui can't get home to celebrate Lunar New Year. Ji-Young's family in Korea, Qui's family in Vietnam, and Lily's family in China all celebrate the same holiday. It's a special day and they're sad they're missing being at home.

Cookie Monster draws his blue fur, his googly eyes, and cookies. Charlie draws her blue eyes, curly blonde hair, tap shoes, and challah bread because it's one of her favorite Jewish foods. Julia draws her straight hair, musical notes, paw prints, and her dog Rose. Elmo draws his red fur, orange nose, a piano, and watering a flower with Abby because being a kind neighbor is part of Elmo's identity. Tamir draws his brown skin, coily hair, comic books, and some veggies as he loves gardening in the community garden. There are so many special things that make you, you!

Tamir's Water Works

Tamir is leaving for robotics camp and needs to find a way to keep the garden watered while he's away. First, Slimey tries pouring a bucket of water from a helicopter, but he can only pour a little at a time. Then, Tamir comes up with the idea of putting watering cans on a clothesline but can't think of a way to fill them back up with water. A porcupine walks by and accidentally sits on a water bottle. That gives Tamir the idea to make a sprinkler with a bottle, hose, and some tape. But the sprinkler can't be moved around! Just then, Tamir gets another idea and asks the porcupine to sit on an old hose to poke holes and places the hose through the planters to make a drip irrigation system. It works! Tamir didn't give up and now the flowers, fruits, and veggies in the community garden can have plenty of sunlight, soil, and water.

Tamir Learns Tagalog

TJ is excited to meet his favorite comic book artist Bobby Manalo and wants to do something kind for him. Mr. Manalo's family is Filipino just like TJ's. Both of their families come from the Philippines and Filipino families like TJ's give gifts to make someone feel welcome. TJ wishes he could draw comic books; he'd make one for Mr. Manalo. Tamir offers to help TJ draw the comic book and TJ comes up with the story. While working on the comic book together, Tamir also learns to say a few words in Tagalog like hello and thank you, to say something to Bobby Manalo to make him feel welcome too. It's time for the comic book signing. Tamir feels nervous that he might forget how to say the words, but Chris explains that it's okay if he forgets. The important thing is that he's trying his best and learning to speak someone else's language is a really great way to show you care. TJ and Tamir finally meet Bobby Manalo and give their comic book gift to make him feel welcome.
